In this seminar for Temple University Dance Department students, Asimina Chremos will introduce the three parts of Contemplative Dance Practice (CDP), Sitting Meditation, Personal Awareness Practice, and Open Space; and share her understandings particularly of Personal Awareness and Open Space. CDP is a valuable practice for those who make art from the body: it invites deep self-care; enables creative research in community; and facilitates non-judgemental observation of self and others. CDP also helps artists to gain a more nuanced understanding of the "empty" space that supports the body in motion. The seminar will include practice and discussion.

Asimina Chremos’ (b. 1966) first job in the arts was as a ballet dancer with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, where she danced from 1983 — 1986. She encountered Contemplative Dance Practice in the late 1980's, during a summer workshop at Naropa University that included intensive studies with the form's originator, Barbara Dilley. After graduating from Temple University with a BFA in Dance in 1991, Chremos began developing her own choreography, deconstructing the femininity of ballet with costume and performance. Her 1995 work Bridle was discussed in Sally Banes' book Dancing Women: Female Bodies on Stage (Routledge, 1998). In the 2000's Chremos was living in Chicago IL where she formed creative relationships with members of the free jazz/impro music scene, and began to shift her dance practice away from performance art and choreography and focus on performing dance improvisation in collaboration with sound. She returned to Philadelphia in 2011 and soon after, joined with Lisa Kraus and Jude Robison to begin a Contemplative Dance Practice Group at the Philadelphia Shambhala Center, initiated with a workshop taught by Dilley. The group continues regular practice to this day.
